THE COMPANY

New Ventures Operation of Fortune 50 Company

THE SITUATION

Seven high-tech operations were spun off by parent company. Businesses were capitalized with outside funds; managers were given equity; parent retained a large minority position.

Having survived the first 18 months of independent life, stockholders were struggling with ideas for the future direction of these businesses. Operations ranged from Superconductivity to Filtration Devices, Metal Casting and High-tech Publishing. Six of the businesses had only technically oriented management groups; all but two were barely surviving.

ACTION

Visited and analyzed each business. Reporting to the Boards of each company and senior executives of parent, devised strategies ranging from closing down one operation, expanding marketing in others to aggressive acquisition programs for two of the businesses.

RESULTS

Recommendations were followed by three of the companies;   each of these continued and prospered to varying degrees; three of the remaining four ultimately went out of business.
